      <image:title>About Us - About Us</image:title>
<image:caption>Black/African Centered psychology is a dynamic manifestation of unifying African principles, values and traditions. It is the selfconscious “centering” of psychological analyses and applications in African realities, cultures, and epistemologies. Black/African Centered psychology is ultimately concerned with understanding the systems of meaning of human beingness, the features of human functioning, and the restoration of normal/natural order to human development. As such, it is used to resolve personal and social problems and to promote optimal functioning. “If you are black and a psychologist or interested in psychology, then this is must! Get access to the greatest African heritage minds of all time”. Black psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors and their allies committed to this mission need an organisation to support this essential journey. Or else they will just practice Eurocentric psychology and concepts with a different coloured in face. Do you want to optimise black people for the 21st century using the very best of African thought, practice and research in constant exchange with the contemporary world? Do you want the support of the village to manifest this vision? Do you want to be part of an organisation that will spearhead community initiatives to bring African research based healing to the black community. Are you both of the people and for the people? Do you want understanding and support from warrior healers who both achieved and thrived despite contextual challenges? Do you want a safe space as black healers to discus your issues?</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Us - Self Determination</image:title>
<image:caption>The Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi) was founded in San Francisco in 1968 by a number of Black Psychologists. They united to actively address the serious problems facing Black Psychologists and the larger Black community. Guided by the principle of self determination, these psychologists set about building an institution through which they could address the long neglected needs of Black professionals. “In order for we as black people to be illuminated to reach the fullness of ourselves and transform to be the very best version of ourselves we can be, we need an organisation to advance African / black psychology in the UK”. Their goal was to have a positive impact upon the mental health of the national Black community by means of planning, programs, services, training, and advocacy. Their objectives were: To organize their skills and abilities to influence necessary change, and To address themselves to significant social problems affecting the Black community and other segments of the population whose needs society has not fulfilled. The Association of Black Psychologists has grown from a handful of concerned professionals into an independent, autonomous organsation of over 1400 members. This is the UK Chapter</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Association of Black psychologists (ABPsi) USA has now become international. UK Abpsi is now an affiliate member of the USA National body. We are overjoyed to be able to share the knowledge and experience of our elders, brothers and sisters. Our Objectives are to advance African Psychology, to address significant problems affecting the Black community, empowerment of the African Character, and enlivenment and illumination of the African Spirit. The UK ABPsi chapter was officially launched on March 17th 2018. This heralded the start of a series of black psychology workshops-presentations. For those who will be attending the 50th convention of Abpsi USA this will be a wonderful opportunity to meet with other attendees, find out more information about Abpsi and hopefully choose to become a member of this most auspicious organisation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“A generation was cultivated with an alien set of priorities [to] only want membership in the predominantly white professional organisations. They no longer understand that there are unique needs that the oppressed communities of previous generations still have, the kind of relevance that led to the formation of these ethnically-orientated professional organisations. They believe that these black professional organisations were simply formed because they were not permitted in white professional organisations. They don’t realise that there was recognition of some special issues that needed special attention from professionals who were committed to being effective leaders for their communities [and the issues those communities predominantly face]”. — Dr Na’im Akbar (2016) in New Visions For Black Men.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dr Edwin J. Nichols contributed ground-breaking work in African Psychology from his development of his theory of the philosophical aspects of cultural difference. In particular how environmental conditions shaped the values, behaviours and characteristics of those raised in certain historical settings. Dr Nichols was passionate about developing Abpsi in the UK since a professional friendship formed with our UK Abpsi President Rameri Moukam. This led him to advise and later ship at his expense books to found a resource on African psychology in the UK. We are eternally grateful for his input which led us to approach him to be our UK Abpsi Jegna. The word ‘Jegna’ is more suitable as it stems from the ancient African kingdom of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) rather than the word Mentor which is of Greek origin.</image:caption>
